While Sapporo steals the headlines when it comes to snow festivals in Japan, the Tohoku region offers plenty of off the beaten track igloo adventure.

I’m just back from an assignment in Tohoku, taking in the snow festivals, doll festivals, sake breweries and UNESCO sights, as well as making the most of all that wonderful food. In short, a mixture of well-known and well-guarded Japanese traditions.

Passports with Purpose

Passports with Purpose is a fundraising initiative that invites travel bloggers from around the world to get together online to make the world a better place (I know it sounds cheesy, but it’s actually true.) Last year, Passports with Purpose raised a staggering 30 000 dollars and used this money to build a school in rural Cambodia, complete with a school nurse. As a direct result of this travel blogging activity, children now receive education and healthcare where before they had neither.

Un-Cruise Through Alaska

The wilderness of Alaska is best appreciated by solitude and exploration. That’s my opinion, anyway, so I was thrilled to discover that the established American Safari Cruises will launch its InnerSea Discoveries next year. By taking no more than 12 people at a time onto the glaciers, forests and shores of southeast Alaska, they hope to encourage the appreciation of wilderness itself, as well as preserving the environment for the future.

Despite the stillness of the water, there’s no sound of silence. Insects skim across the reeds with a soft buzz and woodpeckers tap against acacia trees. Birds chatters in all directions – yet the loudest by far are the doves.

Chu charra, chu charra.

“Work harder, work harder,” says Rodger, slipping a pole into the delta and easing us forward.

“Drink lager, drink lager,” says another guide, Amos, illustrating a different point of view.

From where I’m sitting, level with the water in a slender mokoro, I hear something else. Botswana, Botswana, Botswana.
